As they neared the end of the tunnel, Pause, Beef and Etho let out a sigh of relief. This was the final one, the last artifact and they would be free. Free of this accursed place. Free of it's gruesome foes and mind destroying labyrinths. They had faced so many perils in the past few month, deadly traps, horrifying creatures and Silverfish. But they had conquered them all, they had survived.

And then, there it was, the Zistonian Lens, the final obstacle to their freedom. One more stretch and they would be able to return home to their loved ones. As they stood there ready to end this, they fell to their knees devastated, for they now saw what perils awaited them at this wretched place. Once a marvel of technology, the lens now stood there, infested, cursed and corrupted. At the base of the tower stood an army of zombies and creepers. Skeletons patrolled the perimeter, dark silhouettes could be seen from the windows and ghasts could be heard lurking in the shadows at the top of tower. Why they wondered, why had they been abandoned here, why must they suffer this madness and which god had forsaken them so? So many unanswered question plagued their mind as they contemplated the task at hand. But one thing was certain, they had to finish this. Freedom was to close to give up now.

"Where do you guys think the artifact is in this thing?" Asked Etho.
"If the others were any indication," answered Beef "it's going to be at the top."
"Ugh! I was afraid you would say that Beef."
"This is the final artifact Pause, we can't stop now. We just have to try to go in, get the artifact and get out."
"Easier said then done Beef," said Etho "that thing is crawling with monsters and I barely have any breaching materials left."
"Well I think if we head to the center as quickly as possible we should be able to climb up without to much trouble. Keep your breaching material for when we get there, just in case."
"Do we have any of those speed potions left Etho?" Asked Pause.
"Only one, we used the rest of them to escape that cave at the last intersection."
"Damn this is going to suck."
"Agreed, but we have to," added Beef, "lets get this over with and finally go home."

Now resolute and determined, they stood up and prepared to move in on this monstrosity. Slowly they walked down the stairs leading to the entrance, as they neared the monsters perimeter all three of them bolted for the opening, swords drawn and ready to cut through anything that stood in their way. The moment the skeletons notice them, arrows whizzed by them by the dozen. The zombies started towards them to block them out, but by the time enough of them could manage to reach the gate it was to late, all three of them were already hacking through the hordes, swords swinging left and right, slowly making their way to the center pillar that leads to the lens. They had to hurry, the monsters numbers were already quite high and they could hear reinforcement marching towards them. Suddenly, arrows started falling from the second floor of the inner chamber of the gate.

"it's an ambush!" shouted Beef as he barely evaded an arrow aimed at his head.
"Dammit guys," shouted etho, while chopping another skeleton, " we need to break trough or we'll be overwhelmed."
"I got an idea," replied Beef "Pause hand me a couple of regen potions, I'll hold them off here while you two dash to that pillar."
"Are you insane Beef, they'll rip you to shreds"
"We have no choice Pause! If we don't get that artifact, we'll just become more damned souls in this accursed place!"
"Here," said Etho, passing him some TNT and a redstone torch, "the moment you think were good, blow a hole somewhere and escape and whatever you do, don't play the hero here, we all survived so far and we're all going home together."

They all clasped hands together in between sword swings and wished each other good luck. Pause took out his bow and shot at the skeletons up top while Beef and Etho pushed back the closest zombies . The moment they had a clear path Etho and Pause rushed towards the pillar leaving Beef behind. Rushing through the corridors, they could only hope that Beef would be ok but they had to reach the top, there was no alternative. Left and right they turned, ever closer to the center pillar. Suddenly, the walls rumbled loudly as the sound of an explosion echoed through the corridors. It had to be beef, he had managed to escape. Now with worries lessened and their hearts more at ease, they pressed on. The pillar was close, they could feel it. One more turn they thought, just one more. And then, there it was, the central pillar. Thinking they would find a massive pillar designed to support the structure above, the were quite surprised to find a simple one meter wide pillar with a simple ladder going up to the lens. The lens, they thought, must of been anchored to the ceiling or to the walls somehow, at this distance they couldn't tell.

As they stared at the pillar and the lens above, an arrow whizzed by Pause's ear. They were so focused on the pillar that they did not hear the approaching enemies. Both darted to the pillar and started climbing up as fast as they could. Etho took the lead closely followed by Pause bow in hand. A few meters up, Pause noticed that the monster weren't following them.
"Why aren't they following us" he asked himself, still climbing.
"Pause watch-out!" Shouted Etho as a firecharge flew at them.
It was ghasts, that's why the monsters down below weren't following them.

Pause barely evaded the explosion as it destroyed the pillar below him. Both were now climbing faster then ever as more firecharges flew by in an almost continuous barrage. Explosions were going off left and right as they reached the relative safety of the lower level of the lens. Breathing heavily from their climb, Etho and Pause took a look around the room. So far so good they thought, no monsters seemed to be coming for them. Multiple paths now lay before them but which one lead to the top? taking advantage of this calm they sat down a minute to rest. Soon however, they started to hear the familiar clacking and squishing of footsteps. They knew they had to start going again soon, this room was much to small for a fight.

"Where to go now Etho?"
"Your guess is as good as mine Pause." replied Etho looking at all the passages, "None of them seem to go up or have any distinctive sign as to where they go to."
"Alright then, let's go in that one. It's as good a direction as any."
"Yeah, we better leave before something shows up."

They hurried down the corridors, the sound of footsteps following them. As they reached the next room, they were welcomed by multiple witches and zombies. At the far side of the room, behind the monsters they noticed a set of stair leading up, this might be their chance they thought. Quickly drawing their sword ready to fight, they rushed the first few zombies cutting them clean in half. The witches started throwing deadly poisons and volatile concoctions at them but Pause managed to put one down with his bow before she could be any threat. The others, surprised by the quickness at which they were being defeated failed to see Etho rushing them and fell to his sword. More reinforcements had arrived during the skirmish and both were now being overwhelmed. With the stairs at their back they could just run for it but they knew that with this many mobs behind them they would have no means of escape.

Reluctantly Etho reached for his bag, turned to Pause and said:
"Pause take this speed potion and head to the top, I'll take care of these."
"Dammit Etho, I'm not letting you die here alone, I'm..." started Pause
"Just do it." Ordered Etho Throwing the potion at Pauses feet.
Pause could already feel the invigorating effect of the potion but still hesitated to leave another of his friends behind. He had no proof that Beef made it out and now this might be the last time he would see Etho. With tears in his eyes, Pause turned around screaming in pain and frustration and bolted for the stairs. Etho griped his sword firmly, took out some TNT and said:
"Alright you lousy zombies, let's see how you handle the Etho".

Pause was now running at break neck speed up the stairs, hoping and praying that his friends were ok. Reaching the top of the stairs the corridor headed towards the inner lens and hopefully to the artifact. Pause encountered minimal resistance along the the way. A few skeletons and a lone zombie was all there was between him and the central chamber of the lens.
Reaching the central chamber, he paused a moment and saw it. At the center of the chamber inside a glass box, rested the artifacts' chest. Finally all this could be over, but there was no time to celebrate, Pause could hear skeletons approaching from some of the other tunnels. He hurried to the box, smashed one of its sides and claimed the artifact from the chest. Going back the way he came, he suddenly stopped frozen in his track. Monsters were now coming down the corridor he had taken. Had his friend fallen to the horde or had they simply gotten past him. With no time to dwell on such things, Pause headed back to the central chamber in hopes that one of the other corridors would lead to the outside.

Reaching the chamber, Pause chose one of the other paths and bolted, running as fast as his speed potion would allow him. A few seconds later the corridor turned right into what seemed to be an exit. He could see dim light seeping through the cracks of the door. Reaching for the doorknob, Pause steadied his sword and readied himself for what may await him on the other side. He knew that whatever was on the other side he would have to fight, he could feel the effects of the potion slowly wearing off which meant he might not be able to outrun whatever he encountered. As he opened the door, he was met with a wondrous and devastating sight. The door opened up to a walkway outside of the lens. If this was in any other situation Pause would of taken the time to admire this surreal sight before him, but with monsters on his tail and the artifact in his pocket, time was of the essence. He started carefully making his way on the outside looking left and right for a way down, one false move here and he would surely fall to his doom. A few minutes later there was still no sign of a way down. With this side so disappointing, he made his way to the other side only to find more emptiness. Was there no way out of this accursed place. There were no ladders or staircases anywhere, only smooth surfaces, railings and what looked to be an open air, farming area one story below.

Pause was now desperate, by now the monster had surely reached the door he used to get here and were coming for him, furthermore he could hear the approaching sound of ghasts. The was only one option now, he needed to try to reach that farm area in hopes that it had an access to the insides and from there, he could try and climb back down to the lower levels. He approached the side of the lens carefully. The jump seemed possible and thanks to his featherfall enchanted boots, it should not be painful at that height. Pause steadied himself, aimed well and jumped only to land with a splash in the irrigation canal of the farm. Getting out of the canal he heard the familiar cry of a ghast firing at him. Jumping to the right pause evaded the blast and ran towards the door on the far side. He opened the door only to realize that the path was blocked by debris. Pause was now stuck here with ghast above and monsters approaching. He searched frantically around the farm for any other solution but none seem apparent. He looked over the edge of the farm hoping there would be another level accessible from here but all he could see was the bottom of the cavern.

With ghasts now firing at him in a steady barrage, he had to make a decision. He looked over the edge once more to make sure. He was right, at the bottom of the cavern there seemed to be water. Was it large enough or even deep enough, he could not know but he knew he had to make a choice. If he wanted to live, he had to take a chance, staying would mean certain death. Taking a deep breath and focusing all his courage, he ran to the ledge and jumped. This is it, he thought, this is how it all ends. With the ground and water approaching fast, all he could do was hope that the pool was deep. With a loud splash, Pause broke the surface of the water and slowed down safely, his boots taking the majority of the impact with the surface. As he breached the surface again to breath, he looked around unable to fully realize that he had made it. With a sigh of relief, after pinching himself a couple of time, he made his way to the edge of the pond and climbed out.

After looking back up at the top of the lens, still incredulous of the stunt he pulled, Pause started making his way around the lower complex were he and Etho had left Beef. With the ghasts still trying to kill him there was no time to rest. While most of the creatures were now inside trying to kill them, some were still patrolling the outside and Pause had to fight off a few skeletons and a bunch of zombies. Arriving at the front, Pause slowed down to rest a bit before facing what awaited him around the corner. He slowly inched his way to the corner and took a peak, what he saw at that moment made him overflow with joy and fear, It was Beef. Pause could not believe his eyes, Beef was alive but maybe not for long. He was surrounded by zombies and fighting for his life. Pause took out his bow and ran towards his friend firing a barrage of arrows at incredible speed.

Beef was struggling to hold his position now, he had managed to escape the inner chamber of the gate when part of the monsters got passed him and went after Pause and Etho. But now they must of reached the upper levels of the lens because all those monster were coming back for him. He knew he had to protect the stairs as long as he could. These stairs were the only way out of here. Bits and pieces of zombies were scattered everywhere around him as he Swung his sword left and right. Fatigue taking its toll, Beef suddenly slipped on a severed limb and fell to the ground, dropping his sword from the impact. Was this it, was this to be the end of him? Trying desperately to reach his sword, one zombie blocked his path. He looked up to the zombie with fear in his eyes when suddenly the zombie sprouted feathers from its forehead. Bewildered by this sudden growth of feathers, it took a moment for Beef to realize that it had been struck by an arrow. Looking behind him, Beefs eyes filled with tears as he saw Pause running towards him, bow in hand. He quickly grabbed his sword and with a regain of energy, he started slicing and dicing the zombies around him as Pause turned them into pin cushions. With there combined effort the remaining forces outside quickly fell and they were left alone with each other. Both had tears in their eyes, unsure if this was a dream or how both had survived this hell.

"How did you get out," asked Pause as Beef gave him a massive bear hug.
"When you guys left I got a bit overwhelmed and had to make a run for it inside one of the corridors. It ended on the second floor were those archers were when we came in, from there all I had to do was jump outside to get back here. After that, most of the monsters started coming after me but i managed to hold on, well... until you showed up. Thank you! By the way, where's Etho?" asked Beef with a look of horrified worry in his eyes.
"He's somewhere up there," Pause answered clenching his fist in anger," we had to split up because we were being overrun. He told me to continue on up alone and that he would hold them off. He should of run with me, I shouldn't of left him behind, I..." Pause trailed off unable to continue.
"Common Pause," Beef tried to reassure him, " it wasn't your fault, he did what he thought was right. I'm sure he's alright up there. You know Etho, Pause, he's not th..."

Cut off in the middle of his sentence, both of them were startled by a massive explosion. Looking up they saw that a portion of the lens had exploded. A massive dust cloud now hung in the air as debris and monsters flew everywhere. Suddenly, a shadow jumped out of the hole into the emptiness below. They could not believe this, it was Etho, but what was he thinking. Beef and Pause could only stare as their friend plummeted to his doom. Mid way in his decent, a ghast appeared from around a wall right under Etho. Without hesitation, Etho braced himself for impact with his sword in hand. The moment he landed on the ghast he plunged his sword into the creatures skull. Hi gesture, more a way to steady himself then to kill the ghast, had enraged the creature which was now trashing about trying to rid itself of this unwanted guest. Unfamiliar to this surplus weight, the ghast was slowly losing altitude as it trashed about. Etho took a chance when the ghast passed near a ledge and jumped, landing safely. He turned around only to realize the ghast was now starring at him with murderous intent. Etho could do nothing now but block as the ghast prepared to blow him off the ledge when suddenly, an arrow embedded itself in the ghasts eye. Screaming in pain the ghast turned towards Pause and Beef who were closing in, only to have its other eye pierced by one of Pauses arrows. Now blinded and in excruciating pain, the beast tried to back off only to bump into the cliff. The ghast was now unable to move because of the cliff and Pauses arrows. Etho rummaged through his pack, took out a TNT and a redstone torch and set it down near the ghast. Once lit, Etho made his way down as quickly as possible. Just as he reached the bottom where Pause and Beef were, the TNT detonated, killing the ghast and sending debris their way.

The dust settled and the silence returned in the cavern around them. In this strange silence, Beef, Etho and Pause looked at each other. All three stood there silent, exhausted and beaten but with a smile on all their faces. Suddenly, Pause burst out laughing, soon followed by Beef and Etho. It was now over, they had done it. The final artifact now rested in Pauses pack, the last key to open the doorway home. Our heroes started making their way back to the stairs leading to the last intersection. All three shared stories and plans for when they got home while navigating the tunnels leading back to the ancient monument where the other artifacts awaited. The ancient monument chamber, once a dark and silent room carved in the very mountain, now resonated with the magical energy contained in the artifacts they had recovered. Massive stone effigies of heroes long dead watched over them as they made their way to the last altar. This was it, the final moment, the moment of truth. Approaching the altar they looked back at each other, remembering all the trial they had endured. It was time to end this, they took one last long look at the chamber and at themselves before Pause reached in to his bag and pulled out the final artifact. He then placed it on the altar and waited. Suddenly the entire chamber started to rumble as magical energy flowed from all the altars. As debris started falling from the ceiling, all three wondered if this had been a good idea after all. The magical energy was now so intense that it was visible. The walls and the ground were now shaking violently as our friends struggled to stand. The light and energy suddenly erupted in a blinding flash. All three fell to the ground shaken, blinded and ears ringing. Etho was the first one to recover his sense as the ringing subsided but something was different, strange even. The ground under his palms was no longer cold and hard. The ground was now soft and warm and he could feel the grass between his fingers. It took a moment for him to realize what he was now felling but when he did, he stood up and looked around. Through the haze of his partially blinded eyes he could see the shapes of trees and he could ear the sound of wind rustling the leaves. The had done it, he realized, they were outside.

"Guys!" Screamed Etho, "guys we're outside! wake up, we did it!"
Pause and Beef slowly got up and looked around. Now this was a sight for sore eyes they thought as their eyes recovered. Green hills flowed towards a town to the right and a forest stood majestic to their left. They could see villagers with their sheep in the distance. The village looked familiar and, if their memory served well, they figured they were only a few days walk away from the portal out of this realm. With a sigh of relief and warmth in their hearts, they set out towards the village and, ultimately, home.
